Our lunch process at Frog Song is quite lengthy. Before we even wash our hands we move all of our tables and chairs together to create a place where we can all eat lunch together! This process has, until recently, been reliant on my direction. The children have loved helping set up for lunch, sometimes choosing to stay in with me to set up rather than go outside, on days where time is running short. However, the Wednesday before winter break something remarkable happened. Six children decided to stay in from outside to set up for lunch, and before I could even start the process they had all cooperatively began to move the tables. I decided to become an observer and document the process…
And then it was time to wash hands!
Having lunch together is not only a time that we can come together as a community, but a great opportunity for spontaneous social interactions among the children as they learn how to work together as members of a cooperative community!
