Our property, being open to the public, has been a great place for our children to connect with the greater community. We often run into people from the neighborhood walking their dogs or building bridges in the ravine, some of whom the children know by name now. Recently we discovered something beautiful that children from the neighborhood had built at our pond!
Spring Planting
Once spring had sprung we started preparing for our planting season in the classroom. We have an activity on the shelf that we bring out in the spring time called “planting a seed.” It has been extremely popular…
Once our pea starts grew big enough we planted them on our porch and created rope lattices for them to climb up!
Everyday the children are excited to see how much they’ve grown, and jump at the chance to water them! They often get watered 2-3 times a day.. Good thing they are exposed to so much sunlight! Once they begin to produce peas we will harvest them for snack and the children will get to experience the full cycle of where our food comes from and what it takes to produce it.
Chickens at Frog Song!
Recently we welcomed new members of the community to our property! Chickens!
The chickens are a program created and maintained by students from Madison High School. The children anxiously awaited their arrival once they saw the chicken coop, and now ask to check on the chickens every time we walk by on a nature walk. Sometimes they inspire us to sing a song…
On This Fine Day
Who fed the chickens?
Rex did
Who bailed the hay?
Leandro did
Who milked the cow?
Margot did
On this Fine day
Repeat until every child has been named
Rainbow Dash
The children welcomed our beloved turtle, Rainbow Dash, excitedly this spring! The children have been very excited as she has slowly gained back her energy, and continue to find her bowls and bowls of worms to feed her from the playground!
They also enjoy reciting our turtle poem to her:
My Little Turtle
By: Lindsey Vaschel
There was a little turtle
Who lived in a box
She swam in the puddles
And climbed on the rocks
She snapped at a mosquito
She snapped at a flea
She snapped at a minnow
She snapped at me
She caught the misquito
She caught the flea
She caught the minnow
But she didn’t catch meeeeeeee
